1) Buy the official SAT or ACT guide
There are a lot of test prep books out there, but nothing compares to the experience of using REAL materials. Get these two books so you can practice with the REAL tests:

2) Take a Timed SAT Section
Turn off the computer. Turn off the phone. Close the door. Sit down. Set a clock for 25 minutes. Go.

3) Read a challenging article and discuss it with friends or family
Find something hard but interesting in newspapers such as the New York Times or the Wall Street Journal. Print it. Read it carefully, taking notes and underlining key points. Then sit down at the table and try to teach what you've learned to your friends or family.

4) Register for a test date
One great way to motivate yourself to study is to scare yourself. If you know a test date is looming, it will fire you up to get moving on your test preparation!
